Chamber Supports Belmont Parks And Ball Fields
A resolution urging a "yes" vote for parks and ball fields in Belmont has been adopted by the Belmont Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Belmont residents on Nov. 6 will vote on a $12 million bond package to fund land acquisition and development of new parks and upgrades to existing parks.

The plan includes a 20 to 30-acre community park with athletic fields, a skate park and a river park off Catawba Street in East Belmont.

Information about the parks bonds was presented at a Chamber Business @ Breakfast on Thursday (Oct. 25, 2007) sponsored by East Belmont Baptist Church. Belmont Mayor Richard Boyce told Chamber members and friends passage of the bonds is essential, if the city is to preserve land for parks and playing fields. Available land is rapidly being developed and prices are climbing, he said. If we don't acquire land for parks now, we may not can afford to in the future.

Also speaking at the Chamber forum was Todd Neely, chair or the Belmont Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. He urged participants to support the bonds and to contact their friends and neighbors to encourage their support.

The Chamber resolution said Belmont presently lacks sufficient athletic fields and parks for its residents and cited projections for major population growth. It also said general obligation bonds are the least expensive way to finance capital improvement projects.

In discussing the planned skate park, Mayor Boyce mentioned the tragic death of a Belmont youngster who was hit by a car while skateboarding two years ago. He said developing a skate park will give young people a safe place to play and curtail skateboarding on streets and sidewalks.

The Belmont chamber also has endorsed the Gaston County Schools Bonds, and Boyce urged residents to vote "yes" for the schools. He said the schools in eastern Gaston already are the most overcrowded in the county and experiencing faster growth than other areas.

Polls will be open across the county on Nov. 6 from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
